Lent begins Feb. 26, 2020
Calvary Lutheran will hold a worship service on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday is the first day of the season of Lent. The service will include the Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion.
“This service’s ritual use of ashes,” write authors Gail Ramshaw and Mons Teig, “reminds Christians of two central truths of the human condition. We are mortal. As Genesis 3 says, we are earth to earth,
ashes to ashes, dust to dust. “ The name “Adam” comes from the Hebrew word adamah, meaning soil, she notes. Similarly, the word “human” comes from “humus.”
Over the years, an increasing number of Protestant churches have joined Roman Catholics by observing Ash Wednesday with the imposition of ashes. “That so many even minimally observant Christians attend church to receive ashes indicates that human interest in symbolic ritual. Even without any biblical readings that speak of ashes, the ashes ‘say’ the meaning of the day,” the authors continue.
“We begin the Lenten forty days by acknowledging that we are mortal and will die, that we lament our sins, and that we need to be washed with baptismal waters,” they conclude.
Please join us Feb. 26 for Ash Wednesday worship as Lent begins.
Calvary is located on Main Street in historical downtown Chillicothe, Ohio.
